"Day Of Silence"
Of all the really stupid ideas floating about these days, the annual gay, lesbian, transgender, transvestite, transmorgified, etc., etc. day of silence has to be in the top ten. First of all, if you happen to fit into any of the above catagories, let's face it: Your'e different. Yes, you have the right to live your life as you please, but you will NEVER be mainstream. The rest of us who do not fit into the sexually deviant (yes it is deviant behavior - look it up) catagories fall into 3 catagories:
1. We don't care what you do as long as you keep it to yourself.
2. We love you because we wish we had the courage to do what you do.
3. Book on out, pervert.
From my experience, the vast majority of "straight" folks fall into category 1. Hey, gays, etc. This group is your best friends. Group #2 has some questionable characters and group #3 is pretty much set against you from the get go.
Against this backdrop I ask: What is the purpose of the day of silence? Why should a category 1 person show "solidarity" with GLTTetc, etc.? This is very much a rhetorical question as most people who have given the matter any thought at all, already know the answer: GLTT.. really wants to be mainstream. These people, who should be thankful that they live in a society that tolerates their deviance, want much more: They want their particular variance from the sexual norm to be accepted as normal.
Although it may not sound like it, I am very much a cat 1 person. I would never presume to tell any adult person what they could or could not do as long as it did not interfere with my life.
Personal matters aside, there is the business world. For purposes of discussion, I am including schools ( K- college) in the business world.
In the business world, one conducts, well, business. That might seem like oversating the obvious but sometimes people lose track of that simple idea.
If I were running a business and a percentage of my employees remained silent for a day, I'd be quite incenced. Why? Well, no comunication equals lost revenue. In other words, My employees, in an effort to show solidarity, would be stealing from me.
It is the same in school. If you choose not to converse with friends on that particular day, it is your business. However, if it interferes, in any way with classroom activity or the educational process, the school authorities should take action. Hell, if I were a classroom teacher, anyone who refused to answer a question in class would suffer, grade wise. Likewise, the principal should not ignore this happening and should place appropriate actions. In fact, I will go further: Any school administrator who allows this sort of nonsense to occur on their watch should be fired.
To recap:
If you want to support a political cause, do it on your own time!
